But before I dive into the scoop on the weekend – a huge thank you to Andrew and Jim for all of their behind the scenes work at the tournament.  And thank you to Dana for helping to hold down frisbee central on Saturday.  These folks brought it all together this weekend.

Eight high school teams and three middle school teams came to Corvallis looking for their respective titles.  And after two days of hot weather and sweet ultimate – it’s only memories, scraped knees (and elbows and hips and …), and photos (those waiting for my photos – it’ll likely take a couple of days to post them – I’ll let you know here when they’re done).

Let’s start off with the middle school tournament on Saturday.  Down to three teams on the weekend – Roosevelt X and Roosevelt Y (from Eugene) and Horde (from Corvallis).  Roosevelt’s experience (both X & Y) was clearly evident over their first year competition – and Roosevelt easily won both well played and spirited games over Horde.  And, in case you were curious, Roosevelt X escaped Roosevelt Y 11-8.  The Roosevelt squad(s) took home the trophy for OMSUC and Horde took home the hardware for SOTG. 

On to the high school play.

First, let’s talk Saturday.  Pool B – at the end of the day, as called:  Churchill X (3-0), Summit (2-1), Sheldon (1-2), and Bend (0-3).  The Summit vs. Sheldon game was a close one – as Summit one in cap 10-9.  Pool A – almost as called with Philomath (1-2) and Summit B (0-3) holding seed.  The A1 vs. A2 game (Tribe vs. Churchill Y) looked to be going as called – with Tribe up big (something like 11-5) – and then Churchill made their run.  The Lancers locked down on defense, Tribe’s flowing offense jarred, and Churchill turned in some big disc.  Fatigue, weather, and dehydration taxed both sides.  Final score – at the horn – 13-11 Churchill. 

Crossover games: A2 vs. B3: Tribe vs. Sheldon.  After the big game with Churchill, Tribe had nothing left in the tank – and Sheldon, with their deep game, easily took control, winning 10-5 for the opportunity to play in the semifinals on Sunday.  B2 vs. A3: Summit A vs. Philomath – and Philomath chose prom.  Summit won in forfeit and walks into the semifinals (and still got to camp early for showers).

Sunday: Semifinals pitted Sheldon vs. Churchill X – and X won a close contest 13-8.  As for the Churchill Y vs. Summit game – Summit’s gritty play was rewarded with a 7-4 halftime lead.  And as time on this game began to run out - Y worked themselves back into the game and scored the last 3 points to win 12-9 in hard cap.

Churchill was simply dominant on the weekend by winning both pools with a split squad.  The championship game (with themselves) - turned showcase.  Churchill alumni were on hand (where in the heck did they all come from?) – and it became a game of alumni vs. current Churchill players + extras from Sheldon and Tribe.  We’ll have to see if the photos turned out.

B Bracket: First game of the morning – the MS All Stars (Emu – top players mostly from Roosevelt middle school – who wanted to play in the high school rounds on Sunday) found themselves up against Sheldon B at 9AM.  And, once again, Emu found their tournament upset – sending Summit B to try for 5th place via the backdoor  bracket 13-10.  However, at the end of the day, Tribe claimed 5th.

Congratulations to Churchill in repeating their OHSUC title.  And congratulations to Summit B for running away with the SOTG award.

OK – tomorrow morning – it’s here – and it’s going to be fun. 

Summit has consolidated their 3 teams to 2 teams – and that will give us two sweet pools for Saturday play.  HS teams wil get 3 rounds to 13.  After pool play – we’ll re-seed teams according to the day’s play.  At that time, we’ll have crossover games to seed the championship bracket: A2 vs. B3 and B2 vs. A3. 

After those games – Showcase + Pizza – and we’ll teach the spectators fantasy ultimate. 

Sunday – championship bracket is easy – Semifinals, 3rd Place Game, Finals.  As for the 5th place bracket – we’re adding the Roosevelt MS All Star team to the mix.  That gives us 5 teams for bracket play on Sunday.  The goal: fun & everyone gets at least 2 games.

Yeah, it was time to get creative – and I know that after the tournament, I’m going to get suggestions on how to make it a lot easier.  But check out score reporter and try not to stare in disbelief too long.  It’ll work (I think).  You can check it out here: http://www.upa.org/scores/tourn.cgi?div=65&id=5042.

Weather has been hot!  Tomorrow – hotter!  They say things will cool off to mid-80′s for the weekend. 

So, where are we at?  9 HS teams and 3 MS teams – with a MS All Star team joining the championship bracket for Sunday.  If this holds – we’ll play a 10 team bracket Sunday morning.   With 4 teams in the first round “playing in” to the final 8.

Saturday morning: 9AM Captain’s meeting.  By then, we’ll have the Sunday schedule in writing.

• Churchill is now X & Y (but not to be underestimated…).
• Sunday B-Bracket is under review.  We’re back to 3 teams (2 HS teams + 1 MS All Star Team).  Stay posted for Sunday schedule.
• Weather report just came.  They’re predicting hot.  WATER – WATER – WATER.  Bring lots of water.  Those 5 gallon team jugs that many folks have covered in dust in the garage – bring ‘em (filled) for your team.

Food – we’ll have supplemental food (bananas & bagels).  However, this isn’t enough calories for these athletes.  Please have your teams also bring food.

On Saturday – 15 teams from around Oregon – 11 High School and 4 Middle School teams will be here in Corvallis for OHSUC 2008.  The updates:

• Saturday morning: Captains meeting @ 9AM. 
• Games start on Saturday @ 9:30AM.  Teams waiting for teams can assess 1pt / 5 minute delay.
• 4/3 gender ratio.  If you don’t have 4/3 – your team can field less players e.g. 4/2, 4/1, …
• Middle school teams, however, can play 5/2 if agreed by coaches / captains.
• $20 / high school player; $15 / middle school player.
• Showcase game will include 2 players from each high school team as voted by their team (1 of each gender).  A Pool players will play B Pool players.  This is a throwback to the earliest OHSUC games.  Pizza will be provided.  Fantasy rules will be reviewed prior to the start of the game.
• Score reporter has the tentative high school schedule.  Middle school schedule is not currently posted – but expect the same times / rounds.
• In the B Bracket on Sunday morning – a MS All Star team from Eugene will round out a pool of 4.
